Alex Lipinski

The first thing that hits you is the voice. From caressing sympathy to full-throated resentment, Alex Lipinski has grabbed unwary listeners from the West Country to Krakow, Berlin and New York, since he first left Somerset to become a crucial habitué of Soho’s legendary, lost 12-Bar Club. He has followed in the footsteps of his hero Dylan to write in the Chelsea Hotel, and sung songs in the home of an admiring Liam Gallagher, who is a firm champion.

A brief tenure heading up Phoneys & The Freaks with Oasis’s Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs brought forth an EP, festival appearances and touring in the U.S and Italy. Lipinski’s latest album ‘ALEX’ was recorded and produced in Berlin by Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) and released on Anton’s ‘A’ Recordings label. Hailed by Newcombe as, “a young man worth my time and efforts. I appreciate his endless hard work and do it yourself ethics. Make no mistake, these songs have all the qualities of timeless music.”

Lipinski’s potential was obvious when he arrived with his guitar in Soho a decade ago. Relentless graft and restless experience see that potential now being fulfilled.

Chris Slade Timeline

Chris Slade is a rock drummer from the same town in Wales as Tom Jones. He has enjoyed a long and varied career, starting out in 1963 with Sir Tom’s backing band, The Squire.  He then played with Toomorrow, whose vocal attraction was an Australian blonde called Olivia Newton-John, before becoming a founding member of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. “An Earth Band without Chris Slade would be like a bird without wings”.

After this he went on to play with a variety of great musicians and bands including Frankie Miller, Kai Olsson, Uriah Heep, Gary Numan, David Gilmour and The Firm with Jimmy Page, Paul Rogers and Tony Franklin.  “The all important drum seat was filled by Chris Slade of Manfred Mann’s Earth band and Tom Jones’ fame. But Jimmy (Page) had to wait until Chris came off the road from the Dave Gilmour tour. Jimmy didn’t mind, Chris was a monster drummer and well worth the wait.”

Chris joined up with Gary Moore before getting a call from AC/DC, playing on their acclaimed “Razors Edge” Album, and giving a killer performance on their concert DVD, “Live from Donington”.

After his stint with AC/DC, Chris joined up with 80’s prog-rock band Asia before making an album with English power trio “Damage Control” as well as touring extensively worldwide.

As if he wasn’t busy enough around the world with sold out shows in Brazil, Europe, Russia and USA, former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade launched a new band ‘THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE’ to mark 50+ years as a professional rock drummer, performing a varied set list from Tom Jones, Manfred Mann’s Earthband, Uriah Heep, The Firm, ASIA, MSG, David Gilmour, Gary Moore along with a fair degree of AC/DC numbers and many surprises to be unwrapped along the way.

This band was put on hold for a while when Chis was called back to re-join AC/DC in 2014.  He was once again within the AC/DC Family and resumed his usual position of sitting down at the back of arguably the most famous band in the world playing to 80,000 people a night on the “Rock or Bust” worldwide tour which included a personnel change of Axl Rose replacing Brian Johnson for part of the tour.

During this tour Timeline took a hiatus, but as soon as possible Chris Slade and Timeline were reunited and continue to this day to tour the world, including at Somerstock 2022!  Be prepared for a whirlwind tour from some of the UK best musicians.

Nick Parker and the False Alarms

Glastonbury based Nick Parker started gigging in his early teens playing mandolin and singing in folk/rock/skiffle band ‘Why?’, and spent the next 10 years bouncing around on stages at hundreds of venues and festivals around the UK and Europe. In 1998 Nick called it a day with Why? and started guitar band ‘Tobermory’. After various false starts, a few flirtations with industry ‘big’ boys and a few tours in Germany, Tobermory played their last gig in 2004.
In 2010 Nick embarked on a solo career and has since released four full-length albums, 2010’s ‘The King of False Alarms’, 2014’s ‘Angry Pork and the Occasional Bird’, 2017’s ‘Besta Venya’, (tracks from which have been played on various BBC6Music shows) and 2020’s Make Siddowda – Live from Worcester.
Over the years Nick has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with The Wedding Present, Bright Eyes, Frank Turner and Mike Peters among others, and has recently provided tour support for Levellers, Ginger Wildheart & the Sinners, and Skinny Lister.

Nick’s songs are often tongue-in-cheek and cheerful, and on the rare occasion when fun IS poked (usually at himself) it is always with a wry smile and an element of satire. The audience are often encouraged to be a part of the show, from holding up lyrics or creating sound effects, to providing basslines or collectively being Nick’s duet partner.
Although primarily a solo effort Nick often plays with his band ‘Nick Parker and the False Alarms’ which is a folky/rocky/country affair using guitars, fiddle, pedal steel, banjo, mandolin, cornet, accordion, keys, whistles, pipes, bass and drums, often with various members switching instruments when space permits. At a recent gig the band were described as ‘A British Arcade Fire’, something that Nick was very pleased about. At that same gig they teamed up with Les ‘Fruitbat’ Carter to perform a 9-piece version of CarterUSM’s Only Living Boy in New Cross, something that now happens whenever Les is in the building.
The False Alarms’ newest addition is multi-instrumentalist John Leonard. John, fiddle player Ben Wain and Nick also regularly gig as a trio and the term ‘beautiful shambles’ springs to mind.
Over the last few years Nick – either solo or with his various line-ups – has played at many festivals including Chagstock, Wickham, Watchet, Glastonbury, Frivolt (Sweden) and Zytanien (Hannover) among many others, with the highlight being Beautiful Days mainstage in August 2019.
When Nick’s not gigging he is usually busy making videos for his songs which include a very time consuming lyric video made using spaghetti letters, and an even more time consuming stop motion animation of a live gig which has recently been selected for inclusion in the Leeds International Film Festival.

Nick recently made a return to video making and much of his work will be featured on Levellers’ new album Peace (DVD version) which comes out in August. He also has the honour of taking the False Alarms on a European tour supporting Levellers in October – all things being well.

Young Martyrs

Music should take you somewhere, should make you feel something. So say Young Martyrs. There’s no attempt here to be clever, they just play great songs.

The common thread running through Young Martyrs is that they keep coming back to a few simple needs; guitars, drums, great lyrics and great harmonies. The debut album came from a handful of songs written by Tom over a decade or so, but which just hadn’t found the right family yet. It took the end of the world as we know it (see 2020) and a need to create something with a bit of heart for Tom, Lee, Rich and Simon to put other work aside and bring these songs to life.

Putting something together during a global lockdown was no easy task but the album that emerged from it has received a fantastic response, getting played on radio stations across the UK. The band are excited to get out onstage now and share the news with friends old and new.
